I would LIKE to say that the best are full of passionate intensity ... and, perhaps, things are changing in in that direction here in the US. But it's still loudest voices are still those on the lunatic fringe. For every act of kindness, compassion, and generosity done by people who are proud (and rightly so) to call themselves both Conservatives and Christians there are people like Limbaugh, Fred Phelps, and the guy who shot Dr. Tiller. Their violence and what I would call hatred (but they would not) are the most passionate and intense voices one hears today.

President Obama may be changing that. It may be that his speaches in Egypt and at Buchenwald (I haven't seen all the D-Day one yet.) He may touch enough people so that we will all remember that calmness, rationality and reason are what allow us to make progress and to understand one another. But so far the most passionate and intense voices I hear are not those of the best. (Besides, that's how Yeats wrote the line and and all of these images are coming up as direct responses to the poem.)
