I'll try to explain, it's wasn't hard. When you open my finished image now, you will see that I deleted the extra layers I had, they were confusing things.
Open Phoenix and import both resources.
Duplicate each one, and then hide the originals (click on the eye next to each.)
Arrange the layers so the girls face is on top and then lower the opacity until you see the wall showing through but can still see the face.
Click on the face layer and using the polygonal selection tool trace (select) the shape of the hole in the wallpaper. What you are really doing is cutting this shape out of the girls face.
Copy and paste that selected shape into a new layer. Change the new layer blend mode to overlay. This is what makes the girls face pop out of the concrete block wall.
Click back onto the layer with the girls face and reset the opacity to 100% then change that layers blend mode to overlay.
Leave the wall as the bottom layer and leave the layer mode at normal.
You will only have the three layers plus the two original that you leave hidden.

I'm really happy that you like this.

the derivative is awesome... i'll comment here though, since that one is already flooded with comments (and rightly so), but mostly to compliment you for the minitutorial - very nice of you, you really are a star :)
